This year Daily 5 activities will take place during literacy center time. Students will be assigned centers to work on either individually or in partners. There will be two rounds of centers daily for a combined time of 25 minutes. Throughout the week, different students will be working with me during this time as well.
Daily 5 is a popular time with our class. Every day for 25 minutes, the class completes a daily 5 activity. Each day students are encouraged to choose a different activity that focuses on a specific language skill. While students are working independently on an activity, I meet with students to perform reading assessments or guided reading sessions in small groups. Below is a list of our daily 5 activities:
1. Read to Self: Students are encouraged to pick "good fit books" and use reading strategies to increase their reading fluency during this activity.
2. Read to Someone: Students practice reading "knee-to-knee and elbow-to-elbow" with another friend in the class. When reading in partners, students are not only able to practice their listening skills but are able to practice reading out loud while using expression. Students are also encouraged to help each other when a partner is stuck on a word.
3. Work on Writing: Students practice different forms of writing (story writing, comic strip, letter writing, etc.) They are encouraged to use their personal word wall, the class word wall, and to sound out the words when they come to a word they do not know how to spell.
4. Work with Words: Students are encouraged to use different materials (magnetic letters, bananagrams, boggle, whiteboards, flash cards, etc.)to practice sight words and their word building skills.
5. Work with Teacher: Students meet with me for small guided reading groups. Students will be placed in these groups based on their reading levels. We will focus on reading strategies and reading comprehensions skills.
